sexual abuse or sexual assault is a life changing experience. For victims to acknowledge the most vulnerable time in their lives is extremely difficult and requires great courage. Being sensitive to that fact, we choose art as the platform to assist survivors in their therapeutic process.
Our most recent endeavor is the Art of Peace (AOP) project, a collection of anonymous artwork created by sexual assault/abuse survivors or supporters of the cause. Those who share their artistic expression will assist in our fight against sexual violence against women. Survivors expressing their feeling via art can be empowering, allowing them the opportunity to take control of their own identity. This project will allow us to make a significant impact on such a serious issue, where the number of victims are growing at an astounding pace. This unique collection of artwork will be sold in various creative pieces and the proceeds will be used to promote sexual assault and sexual abuse awareness nationwide.
We promote art over the more conventional means of therapy because not all victims are receptive to openly discussing the assault or abuse. Art is the primary outlet of human creativity; it allows oneself to express themselves without remorse.
By using art we are able to increase awareness of this sensitive topic in a ways that encourages diversity in while engaging the wider public in a critical dialogue. Using art will harvest new perspectives on the issue. Now more than ever, the obligation to broaden the discussion of sexual assault against women is incumbent upon us all.
We encourage all forms of art, but we have are especially delighted to possess art that can be touched, heard, experienced, as well as viewed. Art that causes people to reflect on the issue at large that larger community that challenges the viewers traditional perspective of art.
