the name Aprilmay?

our mission

the origin of aprilmay

aprilmay was born after the founder befriended a 13 year-old young lady who was 8 months pregnant with her first-born child, who was also her brother. Following the birth of her son, the unresolved issues of her molestation became evident through her promiscuity, numerous volatile relationships and decapitated self-esteem. The victims family dismissed the abuse and forced her into silence, and welcomed the father back into their life. The familys choice to ignore the issue resulted in a costly consequence of the father molesting her youngest child and sibling. After seeing the devastation to one family brought on by silence and the molestation there was an overwhelming desire to assist the thousands of other women and young girls who have a story.
aprilmay campaigns for women and girls whose lives have been adversely affected by sexual assault and sexual abuse. AprilMay uses art inspired projects to generate broader attention to the fight against the sexual victimization of females. Our bold art projects are used for community outreach, education, awareness, and fundraising to achieve three major objectives: - increase social consciousness- dispel the stigma surrounding sexual violence-end the silence of sexual assault and sexual abuseWe will make the teal ribbon, which represents sexual assault awareness as synonymous as the pink ribbon is for breast cancer.
the name aprilmay was derived from the parable "April showers brings May flowers". April represents women whose abuse left them lost and broken. May speaks to women who reclaimed their lives and are now survivors!

Your donations help make our mission possibe

We fundraise to further our awareness campaigns with the goal of making the campaigns national. In addition, we donate a portion of our fundraiser dollars to organizations that offer direct support services to victims/survivors of sexual assault or sexual abuse with the following services:Community Education: for adults, children, and professionals about sexual violence and helping to prevent future sexual violence.Direct Services: Victim Advocate-specially trained individual who offers support to victims of sexual violence and focuses on the emotional needs of the victim. Legal Advocate-specially trained to help victims of Sexual Violence understand the processes of the legal system. The advocate will assist the victim and acts as a liaison with the Police Department and the States Attorney’s office on behalf of the victim.Medical Advocate-will meet or accompany the victim of sexual violence to the hospital emergency room; ensure the victim’s needs are being met and respected; provide emotional support to the victim and victim’s significant others while at the hospital. Counseling-Sexual assault counseling free of charge to all victims of sexual violence and their significant others by way of crisis intervention; short term; long term and group counseling to the victim, the victim’s family and significant other. Coalition Work: The Center’s coalition work helps ensure a coordinated response to survivors of sexual violence and to raise awareness about sexual violence.
When we donate fundraiser dollars to an organization that offer victim support services, this is a modest cost breakdown of how your generous support helps the continuation of no cost services to victims:-$37 provides sexual abuse prevention materials for 100 school children- $46 covers the cost of an hour of individual counseling- $105 will help operate the crisis hotline for a full 24 hours- $540 covers the cost of individual counseling for one adult survivor for three months- $1,000 covers the cost of counseling for a child and her/his family for 6 months- $2,300 covers the cost of self-defense support group

Sexual assault and abuse many times do not leave physical scars, making the aftermath for victims obscure to the world. Many are reticent to address this topic, causing this grave epidemic to continuously be perpetuated by silence, secrecy, fear, disgust and shame. As a result, we devise abstract awareness campaigns that demand attention and challenge the status quo.

A live documentary of courageous women, some of which will relinquish their anonymity to share the most intimate details of their abuse, their aftermath of being a victim of rape and abuse, and how they overcame their pain and are now survivors. Some of these phenomenal woman are speaking out for the first time just to help other victims gain the strength to confront the pain of their abuse to become a survivor. It doesn't stop there...these powerful stories will touch your soul with the life size portraits of these survivors on display for the entire world to see. art of peace project for survivors by survivors

sexual abuse or sexual assault is a life changing experience. For victims to acknowledge the most vulnerable time in their lives is extremely difficult and requires great courage. Being sensitive to that fact, we choose art as the platform to assist survivors in their therapeutic process. Our most recent endeavor is the Art of Peace (AOP) project, a collection of anonymous artwork created by sexual assault/abuse survivors or supporters of the cause. Those who share their artistic expression will assist in our fight against sexual violence against women. Survivors expressing their feeling via art can be empowering, allowing them the opportunity to take control of their own identity. This project will allow us to make a significant impact on such a serious issue, where the number of victims are growing at an astounding pace. This unique collection of artwork will be sold in various creative pieces and the proceeds will be used to promote sexual assault and sexual abuse awareness nationwide.
artwork can be sent “ANONYMOUSLY”. No need to know where the submissions came from, this project is an opportunity for open expression. You can express your feelings without the risk of someone knowing who you are. WE ARE NOT LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT ARTIST. ALL SURVIVORS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE THIS IS "YOUR" HEALING…, IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY WE WANNA HEAR IT, SO ALL ARTWORK IS DESIRED! WHAT DO I SUBMIT? submissions can be in the form of script, words, pictures, drawings, poems... anything that helps express how you feel. The artwork can be submitted in any form from paper napkins, post cards to an 8x10 piece of paper…it’s all art! There’s no limit to the amount of artwork you can submit, so please submit all that your heart desires as often as you like. ALL WE ASK IS THAT YOU PLEASE INCLUDE A BRIEF SUMMARY ABOUT YOUR ARTWORK; HOWEVER, IT IS NOT REQUIRED. how do i submit my art work? Please send us your artwork via e-mail, fax or mail. Note: If sent via e-mail or fax you will not be contacted, your artwork will be downloaded and your email will be deleted.

The Loose Lips movement symbolizes victorious SURVIVORS speak out to liberate victims by sharing their stories. We want to hear from you so use this as an on-line journal to vent and tell your story to assist with the next phase of your recovery.
